Ways to be debt free: Why do you need to write down your expenses

source: http://archive.dyestatcal.com/?pg=dyestatcal-2009-Cross-Country--Road-to-State

I would like to expound a little about writing your expenses by my story.

source: http://phcommute.multiply.com/journal

I just graduated college, reviewed for the CPA board exam, took it and failed. At first it was not that an issue but it came to me I am already a college graduate and I am not already the responsibility of my parents; I should be on my own now. So just like the rest of my classmates in college who failed we all started looking for jobs to make a statement. I applied here and there until I finally landed an accounting staff job at Robinsons Supermarket Inc. Head Office in Eastwood Libis, Quezon City.

It was convenient. I live in Project 3 and the jeepney ride to Kalantiaw in Project 4 was near and from there another jeepney ride going to Eastwood. And so I started working and also started reviewing in the weekends. I am out of the house from Monday to Sunday. And you know what, if you are out there you spend. My salary was at starting which was around Php 8,200.00 only. It was truly a dip into the real life.

Back then I was able to read Bo Sanchez's book Simplify and Live a Good life. There I found the idea of writing down one's expenses to the detail. Funny it was I was an accounting student and now working as an accounting staff doing record entry for a company making sure I balance my records to the centavo and yet I don't balance my own expenses.

Back then the Starbucks Planner was a hit and I am one of those who makes sure when I can afford a Starbucks coffee my booklet get stamped. I got one after some months or a year and that planner ended up a expense book. My sister laughs at me because I made a supposed to be diary a record book. You will see in every page what I spent on that day the moment I step out of the house till my eyes closed at night.

source:http://www.thirstyblogger.com

I learned that there are expenses that are really indispensable and there are some that are unnecessary. In order to save you cut on the unnecessary and manage the indispensable. With that I finally realized I am already starting to have a savings. From there I was able to have an idea how much money I am saving and how can I manage my expenses.

Then I took the exam again but got conditional this time. Transferred to a job with a better time frame and self studied. Took the exam and at last I passed. I searched a job requires a CPA and landed in Orica Philippines. from there and nearly working for 4 years I was able to save up about Php 60,000.00. This savings is now invested at a variable fund at PhilamLife

What lessons did I learn from writing down my expenses?

1. It strengthened my discipline. It made me able to follow the goals I
set because I can see right in front of me what is going on.

2. I learned that if you focus on something nothing is impossible.

3. It is not a matter of time management, it is more of how well you
    pick your choices.

4. Sometimes you just cant believe where your paycheck go but if you
write it down you will know.

5. People will annoy you not because you can't go with them for a bar
session(and because I don't drink and smoke, I only drink coffee) but
because they envy me having savings at an early age and while still
  a bachelor.

Value what is it?

I was reading Bo Sanchez's blog post and a line struck me.

Here’s the equation: Problems create scarcity. And scarcity creates value. And value creates success.
(to read Bo Sanchez's blog post click here)

Let's put that in logical argument:

Problem created Scarcity
Scarcity creates Value
Value creates Success
Therefore : Problem creates Success

Now there is one truth we can pull out from this logical argument, that is Scarcity creates Value. This line is actually what the Law of Supply and Demand teaches.

If you remember: if supply of a commodity is low demand for it rises, when demand for it rises people are willing to buy it at even higher price thus there is a need to raise its price to control such scarce commodity. It is also applicable to thew stock market.

When a certain stock has started to pick up volume after some favorable report or occurrence  the price will start to go upward as indicated in the MACD graph. Such reports like a higher reported quarterly bottom line than expected, a new investor putting in needed capital to enhance or expand the business, or probably a sudden favorable business opportunity that puts the company in a position to profit big can affect investor and speculator perception alike.

When everyone wanted that stock it starts to be scarce. Those who has it already will hold it until it reaches their target price before releasing. Big players will buy in blocks thus limiting the number of shares available. As this happens price action starts to go north and small players try to ride it leading to price trend upward.

When a commodity becomes scarce its value rises that is how many investors pocket big gains. Wise investors starts to accumulate stocks of value when they are not yet scarce meaning they are not yet in demand. They keep on accumulating and they are even happy when the price of the stock they are accumulating still goes down. But remember they don't just buy a stock, they have carefully analyze it and base on some analysis they believed that it will grow in the near future. They accumulate stocks with great potential thus they are unafraid to accumulate such stock.

source: http://radocracy.com

The Philippine stock market is now on the expected correction, this is one of the best time to accumulate fundamentally sound companies. So do your due diligence and don't wait for the time that the stock you want to accumulate becomes scarce.

SCARCITY CREATES VALUE

Value then is define as a status when it is in demand and when it is limited. That is why gold is valuable because we have to dig deep to get it. That is why experts charge us hefty fees for their advice and services. Valuable stocks are themselves valuable because everybody wants it and are willing to pay the price.

Ways to be debt free: Discipline

So here I am again talking about being debt free, well who doesn't want to be debt free?

So we start the third one which deals with what we call discipline.

As usual lets define discipline and I got this definition from http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu

  • S: (n) discipline (a system of rules of conduct or method of practice) "he quickly learned the discipline of prison routine"; "for such a plan to work requires discipline";
  • S: (n) discipline (the trait of being well behaved) "he insisted on discipline among the troops"
  • S: (n) discipline (training to improve strength or self-control)

Why one needs discipline to be debt free? Well in all activities we human beings do we must always have this trait. To be disciplined means having a system that one follows strictly to achieve self-control.

Discipline will be one's day to day guide. It will be the reminder that one will see the moment they wake up from sleep. It is self control.

I know its hard to not to tame the "buy it now" attitude of most of us. We buy things we don't essentially need now even if we don't have the capacity to purchase specially when you are buried in debt.

The very best means that I made to tame myself from spending money is to see where it is going and how much is it as time passes by. I got this idea from Bo Sanchez's book   Simplify and live a Good life

When you see how much money you are spending you will have thoughts  of unbelief after seeing how could a small amount spent for something insignificant  became budget eaters when presented in accumulated basis and at the same time how will one appreciate on savings made on stopping or avoiding spending on unnecessary things.

Here is what you gonna do. Buy a notebook small enough to fit in your pocket or better yet if you have those Starbucks planner use it for this one. Carry a pen always and the moment you make a cash out or spending write it down. Put the date, the nature of spending, and the amount. Do this for all spending you make including credit card purchases.

After a week list down this spending data and organize them into similar expenses and categories like cash or credit card etc. After a week you can see where you are spending. And I bet you this will be an eye opener. You might find out that you might be spending Php 1,000.00 on cigarette which for me is a very non-essential thing and yet you are very willing to spend for. Imagine if you could have quit smoking you could have probably bought a new Levi's pants in 4 weeks.

Do you see what I am driving at? Probably small spending does not hurt or even does not require your attention. But if such is accumulated over a period of time you will realize what a waste it was.

Back then I wrote all expenses even the jeepney fare I pay for. After summing up all my expenses I was able to see my spending pattern. For their I was able to make my monthly budget(since my salary back in my old job is monthly) after deducting my "average" spending it shows that I have a saving of Php 500.00 for my monthly salary...and that is so small saving.

Well after knowing all that I search means and ways to be able to have savings of Php 1,000.00 a month. This means cutting of my unnecessary spending which was Internet usage in Netopia and cutting my coffee addiction to half. It doesn't mean you have to cut all your unnecessary spending all at one time I tell you that would be traumatic.

Do small steps.

For example what I did was to only access Internet every two weeks  and cutting my coffee to only in the morning( I drink coffee when going to work and after work... this was my only addiction :) ). So savings from Php 500.00 went up to Php 1,000.00.

This is what we call discipline. It doesn't necessarily mean it's a punishment by not getting or cutting of your usual things. It just requires one to practice it on a small scale daily basis which in the long run will train one to live it as if its already second nature.

So from now on jot down those spending and you might find where to discipline your spending to save more...

My new segments in my blog: The online stockbrokers that I use

                                source: http://www.yourbrokerguide.com/
If you remember I introduced you to the online stockbrokers... if you haven't read that yet click here.

Okay so let me make some introductions first. One might ask me why online stockbrokers? What are the benefits?

Here are my reasons why I opted for online stockbrokers:

1. Online stockbrokers are cheap. Most only charge a commission of
0.25% to 0.50% per all transaction. Most have no maintaining
fee, and only charge a small fee for call trading assistance.

2. Online stockbroker's platform are easily accessible online and
they are secure. That is why they have to be accredited by both
    SEC and PSE.

3. Online stockbroker's web page are full of information and guides
to help you make that buy or trade

4. And lately after the PSE upgraded most have brought back the
off-hours facility. No more early morning waking up for our stock
investors abroad to place their stock trades

Those are the benefits to name a few.

Now as promise I will be posting a series on how to navigate and use the two online stockbrokers I am currently using. I am using Citiseconline and First Metro Securities Brokerage Corp. to know more about these two click on them to go to their website.

Here is a story on how I ended up with these two online stockbroker.

                                     source: www.citiseconline.com
Citiseconline was the first online stockbroker I applied to. I learned about them through Bo Sanchez's book 8 Secrets of the Truly Rich. Long before I have always wanted to enter the stock market. I remember the days when my professor and dean in PSBA-QC would tell us about his masteral class challenging them to buy stock in the Philippine Stock Market and their grade in his class will be based on the performance of their stock investment. It scared me to take an MBA class because back then I really have no idea even how to buy a stock. Is it done just like going to the "sari sari" store asking the "tindera" to sell you stocks? I know it wasn't.

But in the end while working abroad and after mustering my courage to dive in an unknown territory I checked out Citiseconline's website and tried there 15 day or so free pass which I didn't even use because I really have no idea how to do the action in the stock market.  After nearly 6 months I inquired via email and a reply from Jenny Senining gave me hope of opening an account. I planned and I inquired like a little child so afraid to bring and placed my tiny money in to a strange place called "online stockbroker" but finally when I had a chance to get a vacation from my overseas work I made sure it is my first order in my list. Went Tektite to looked for the Citiseconline office and luckily Ms. Senining was there to assist me and that afternoon I funded my account and got may access after a day..that was late November last year.

And then ecstatic that I was I went to my account check this and that and place my first order. After the day nothing happened. After a week nothing happened. After a month still nothing happen. So I asked myself what's wrong with my bid? Then a new thread in the forum where I accustomed to share my ideas and advices opened. It was about stock investing. And from there on my knowledge grew leaps and bounds due to friends who share the same passion for stock investing. My humble thanks to our OFW friend who started that thread, "maraming salamat rich dad ninong :) "

I made my first buy on March 2010 and from their on I have been buying, then waiting till it profits around 5-10% net of cost before selling and sometimes when times are good I profit up to 40%

    source: www.firstmetrosec.com.ph

The reason why I opened another online stockbroker account is funds accessibility.

Being the online brokerage arm of Metrobank fund transfer from your Metrobank account to your First Metro Securities account is a breeze through Metrodirect. I am in the process of familiarizing myself about FMSB's online platform and will soon share here my experience in navigating and making the most of their platform.

Also the well known stock analyst Gus Cosio is in FMSB and his blog is linked to their website. With the latest announcement that FMSB can now accept off-hours trading I guess more and more Pinoys can benefit from it. Also to open an account you just need a minimum of Php 5,000.00, of which Php 2,00.00 is for your maintaining  balance for your Metrobank account and the Php 3,000.00  cash is available for stock investment.

What it means to be debt free?

We have been discussing stocks for quite sometime now and I would like to step back and talk about some issues that a normal person would like to tackle.

I was reading the blog Simple Mom regarding how she and her husband finally able to say to themselves that they are debt free. It came to me that most Pinoys are becoming like most Americans and that is living in debt. And with that I wonder if the same mortgage crisis happen in the Philippines when most Filipino families will become homeless because they are not able to pay their mortgage on their house.

One rule that me and some of my stock investor friends have always reiterated is to invest only totally free cash. There was one comment in one of my post asking how can one have extra money for investing when upon receiving her paycheck nothing is left. The thing is to be financially free or for this case debt-free is to have a discipline not only to master but also live on a day to day basis.

That is why I recommend Bo Sanchez's book Simplify and Live a Good Life. Being debt free is a goal which needs a plan. So right now sit down and look at your current financial situation. How many debts do you have? It could be a car loan, home loan, credit card debt, school loan, or any other loan you made out of emergency needs. List them down in the order of which is burdensome that is which one has a higher interest rate. As much as possible pay up first loans with higher interest and just give some to those that has a lower interest. This will save you from the dreaded charges that loan companies charge you.
                                     source:http://thedebtfreeusa.com

Start small steps towards your debt free life. And soon you'll realize the value of not owing anyone. There will be no more deadlines to catch. There will be no more allocations to be made for creditors now you can put those extra cash for investments that would generate more money for you till it comes that the money they generate will be more than your wages thus giving you passive income.

There are so many benefits from becoming debt free. How about you what do you do to become debt free and what are the benefits you enjoy now that you are now debt free. Share your thoughts.

How did I start in investing?

I have forgotten that I have been babbling about stock investing and online stock investing for sometime now without sharing how did I start about investing.

Let me share with you a long story of my financial freedom quest and the reason behind it.

My consciousness about the importance of money really started when I was in college. When I was young money was not a problem since it is not my duty to worry about it. Also being and studying in the seminary has taken that away even if I know my mom and dad worry about the tuition(yes some seminaries are not free so if you can donate or sponsor a seminarian please do so). The moment I entered college I learned how money really affects each and every one's life. Studying in Manila is not cheap, living there alone is not cheap.

I enrolled in Philippine School of Business Administration-Q.C. My Alma Mater is primarily focus in the area of Accountancy and Management so I ended up taking B.S. Accountancy. As a newbie in Manila at the same time newbie in accounting I am always fascinated about the course I took. Accountancy is not about how to get rich, it is more of how to analyze the business transaction. If you are also an accounting graduate like me I believe you can do Fundamental Analysis which in our accounting language is Financial Ratio Analysis(the subject you hated besides Accounting 7, Management Accounting, Law, and Tax ).

I know my story is kinda deviating so here is the reason why I got myself to investing.

I read a book written by Eugenio Sanchez Jr. aka Bo Sanchez. The title of the book was "Simplify and live a Good Life". I have read his magazine, Kerygma, and Thank God, His Boss! but in all his works this one greatly influenced me. With my background as a seminarian and the thoughts Bo wrote in this book it made me think why are so many people are tired everyday. They work and work for no reason. They work hard to pay the house they never really enjoyed because 3/4 of the day they are not in it. Money shouldn't be the problem. One must know how to make money work for them so that one wont go to the trouble waking up even though you really don't want to but because you have a house to pay and expenses to pay you drag yourself out of your bed to go to work. I am not implying that going to work is bad, we need to earn a living but most of us are buried in debt that makes our lives miserable.

At the same time at school, we have this subject Corporate Accounting. My professor and dean of the school, Dr. Raul Addatu, would always tell us to buy stocks of SMC(San Miguel Corp.) and wait till it goes up. Yes I learn about stock, stock rights, stock dividend, and so many things about stocks but never about stock investment and stock trading. Dr. Addatu always tells us that in his MBA class, in order for a candidate to be granted the MBA title one must buy a stock and have a profit at the end of the program. That scared me because I was planning to take my MBA but until now I haven't.

So after all those experience I started looking for answers that bothers my mind. I searched publications about investments. I got a primer from a local paper discussing stock investment and my mind started to swirl when I learned that stock brokers require a minimum of 100,000.00 pesos to open an account. Online stock brokers are not yet around at that time. But it did not stop me from dreaming to own stocks of some famous company the likes of PLDT, SMC, and Ayala.

When I was working in my last employer before working here in Guam I already set my goal to be an investor. I have been setting aside money for it. The very first investment I made was at a mutual fund. I just have to make that first move to keep myself going into that direction. It was just a small and right now I don't know how it is already but hoping to check it after five years to avoid charges of early withdrawal of funds.

While working here in Guam I always check the websites about stock market like PSE, DOW, Bloomberg, CNBC and TV shows like CNBC watching the World Wide Exchange, Managing Asia hosted by Christine Tan, and other programs. I waited nearly two years until I opened my brokerage account.

In Bo Sanchez's book 8 Secrets of the Truly Rich he mentioned about Citiseconline. So checked them out and even emailed them on how would I open an account even though I was outside the Philippines. And so last November 2009 while on vacation I opened my account with them placing my initial deposit of 25,000.00 pesos. To tell you the truth I was thinking twice and I was a bit jittery about it. Even though I have read a lot about it and even played the online stock trading game it still makes me think how will I do it.

I have eyed on stock of JFC(Jollibee Food Corp.) and have been placing buy order from January 2010 to early March.  It was only in March that I have my first buy transaction. Then SMPH(SM Prime Holdings). I have been holding this two until it made a profit in around April or May and released it. From their on I started bold buy and sell transactions. It came to the point that I was holding 18 stocks and most of them are at the negative. But it didn't bother me. The years of learning and understanding stock market trading finally sink in to me.

Also I have joined a forum and started this blog to share what I learned about stock investing. It may be scary because it is your hard earned money that is on the line but knowing how to play it and having knowledge about it makes it easy. And so I will re-iterate my and my friends advice when doing stock trading:

1. Only invest free cash
2. When your portfolio is negative you have not yet loss anything
    unless you sell it
3. Buy low, sell high. Lower your average cost per share and take
profits when prices is near your target price
4. Prepare for market correction. Always have available cash for
    bargain buying
5. Read, research, and learn.
6. Don't be afraid to ask, you are an investor
7. Always be humble and share your knowledge to others
8. Trade at your own risk.
